Extreme makeover television show

Jason has just finished filming two episodes of the Extreme Makeover television programme to be scheduled 15th November 2006 at 2200 on Living TV channel.

It is Jason’s continuing reputation as a cosmetic dentist that attracted the TV series producers to ask him to work on two cases for the new series. This was filmed during June 2006 and the whole team were involved in providing an amazing cosmetic transformation for two lucky women.

Jason has also been back to America this year to spend two weeks with some of the finest cosmetic dentists in the world to help further his knowledge in this particular discipline.
In addition Jason has spent a number of weekends on a course with Roy Higson. Roy is one of the leading world experts at curing headaches and facial pain by precision bite adjustment and Jason has been training under him. These advanced treatments allow Jason to help cure chronic facial pain and migraines, as well as giving him the precision to build cosmetic cases that will be very stable over the future years.

We have been very fortunate to have Sheryl Thedvall to take over as our practice manager. Sheryl comes from South Africa and has already made a huge impact at our practice in organizing our systems to ensure we can provide a first rate service our clients have come to expect.

Karim Nasser has joined us as a new associate. Karim qualified in Bristol in 1990 and like Jason has completed a prestigious MSc in implant surgery at Guy’s Hospital. Karim is an excellent dentist who is extremely experienced in all aspects of implant and restorative work and already has built up a loyal patient base from clients who appreciate his kind gentle manner and his high degree of expertise.

Elizabeth Ashton has joined us in the hygiene department. We are extremely fortunate to have Elizabeth working with us, as she is a fully qualified dentist.

Jason has run two “sell out” implant courses at the practice this year, with the help of 3i Implant Innovations from America and Magda who is now our lead implant nurse. These proved very successful and have helped Jason’s quest to train local dentists to be able to provide this advanced treatment.

We are hoping 2007 will be an exciting year.
If you want to change your smile – just ask for a consultation and we are sure you will be amazed at what we can do.

Treating Migraines, Headaches
and Head and Neck Pain

20-25% of adults suffer from regular headaches. There are some 50 million adults in the UK.

A lot of patients have small errors in their bite which make them put their teeth together in a position of comfort rather than the right position. These tiny interferences have precisely the same effect as a stone in a shoe. Instead of limping, patient’s jaw muscles are left to take up the strain of keeping their jaw in a comfortable position and it is usually in these muscles that the pain begins simply because the muscles can never relax.

Some muscles close the jaw, other open it, move it back or forwards and another group allows for sideways jaw movement. Neck, back and shoulder muscles also contribute as bracing muscles which allow our jaws to move smoothly and efficiently.
If a patient’s teeth do not fit and slide together in harmony, one or more of these muscle groups may begin to suffer from fatigue.

This may be felt as headaches, eye pain, shoulder pain - or pain from any of the muscle groups described above. Stress levels are known to make matters worse. We know that each individual can cope with some bite errors without getting symptoms at all. These patients are living within their own limitations without problems. Adding a certain amount of stress to those patients lives, damaging any of the supporting muscles as in a car accident or adding new errors such as a dental crown which does not fit properly, can push these patients from having no problems at all to having lots of problems.

Sometimes it is a partner who knows that something is wrong. Many spouses can hear their partner grinding their teeth all night long. The patient only knows that they do not wake refreshed. What is going on here is that even when we are asleep our brain is trying to position our jaw into a comfortable position. The problem here is that this comfortable position cannot be maintained - so the jaws grind against each other in a never ending search for a good night’s sleep for their owner.

The good news is that these problems are curable on a permanent basis. This means treatment of the cause, which in most cases is the bite. Dr Burns training by the leading authorities means he is able to successfully treat the majority of clients with these problems. Please ask Jason or Sheryl for details.

Digital Panoral Radiograph

Our panoral x-ray unit is the latest digital radiography system. It provides an instant low radiation scan of your teeth and jaws and is the perfect starting point when considering more complex dental work or when re-evaluating your smile before a smile makeover.
The images are easily printed so that you can have a copy and we can even e-mail the x-ray to you or our colleagues. It is a fantastic asset to our practice.

We have been training in taking digital images of your teeth. We have a very impressive Digital SLR set up and the pictures we produce are amazing.

The images greatly help our laboratories in the diagnosis of any cosmetic problems you may have. If you would like a close-up picture of your smile emailed to you, just ask.
We have also produced cd’s with before and after cases of smiles we have changed. If you have not seen one, ask one of our team or email us for one.

Smile Lifts

Further trips to New York for training in 2006, will see Jason achieve Masters Levels in Smile Design at the Aesthetic Advantage Course run by Dr Larry Rosenthal – who is one of the first leading cosmetic dentists in New York. Jason has been asked to instruct on his teaching program in the summer of 2007 at the Eastman Dental Hospital. Continued innovations and refinement of techniques learnt are helping us transform smiles – not only can we achieve fantastic results with little or no discomfort but the process can be completed in as little as two appointments.

Gums

Nikos Papanikolaou is still our specialist in periodontal disease (gum diseases). He is extremely busy on his Tuesday afternoons, and proves to be popular with patients with his kind and gentle nature. His passion for his specialty is a great asset to the White House. Nikos is able to advice us all – dentists, hygienists and you, our patients – on how best to handle the more advanced gum problems we encounter and also how to replace teeth if we are unable to save them.

Invisalign

Jason has been trained in the use of Invisalign – invisible orthodontics. Invisalign can give you the beautiful straight teeth you’ve always wanted. It works through a series of almost invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners (like bleaching trays).

No one can tell you are wearing them.

Being virtually invisible, you can smile confidently during treatment.

Invisalign takes between 9 and 18 months to straighten teeth and is good for moving slightly to moderately crowded teeth. If your teeth are healthy and a nice shape but not quite in the right place then invisalign and bleaching may be the best way to give you a fabulous smile.

Zoom Whitening

2006 saw the launch of “Zoom 2!” tooth whitening. Why is Zoom 2! better than Zoom 1!? It’s faster – whitening in about an hour, leaves the teeth very shiny. We recommend everyone follows up the Zoom 2! with a few days of home bleaching to make sure you get the whitest, sparkliest result possible – the trays also can be used for your whitening maintenance regime

Getty Archive

A valued patient is one of the top photographers in the UK. He has been commissioned by The Getty Archive to take photographs of a “state of the art” surgery with great looking dentists and staff for the archive. The Getty Archives is one of the largest collections of photographs in the world and is viewable online.
You can find the good looking staff here, but unfortunately he was stuck with an aesthetically challenged dentist. These pictures will be available for us to utilize and I hope that when they are uploaded around October time you will take the opportunity to look on our fabulous new website.

The Link Between Gum Disease
and Health

New information in the medical community is suggesting a very strong link between gum health and general health.
The main evidence so far comes from studies that follow large numbers of people to see if those who have bad gums fare differently from those who don’t. The studies strongly hint that people with periodontal disease have a much higher than usual risk of heart attacks.

Studies have also shown a relationship between periodontal disease and pre-term, low-birth-weight babies. In fact, pregnant women who have periodontal disease may be seven times more likely to have a baby that is born too early and too small.

So the bottom line is there is another MAJOR reason to perform good hygiene at home and have regular hygiene appointments. We’ll do our job to inform your periodontal condition, and the new therapies we have introduced from the USA will help you obtain a healthy mouth.

Hygienists

Jason has flown over one of Americas top hygienists, Bobbi Anthony to give a personal 6 day course to our hygienists. From this training, we are making some changes to ensure our hygiene programs are the finest available in the UK. Our girls will be happy to explain these new treatments at your next visit. Don’t miss out and book early to make sure you get a time that suits your schedule, as the girls are extremely popular. Whenever possible we book extra sessions for our hygienists, so don’t be surprised if you receive a call letting you know of extra available dates. We also run a priority list, so if you are trying to get in to see us sooner, let us know and we will call you when a convenient appointment becomes available. We have upgraded our hygiene room this year to provide “state of art” equipment including the latest x-ray machine and an intra-oral camera. This will allow us to carry out joint hygiene appointments with one of our surgeons’ present. We can therefore help plan treatments together for the clients.
